Korea and Myanmar have cooperated steadily in economic and development fields since establishing diplomatic relations in 1975. Korea played an active role in developing the Thilawa Special Economic Zone, Myanmar's largest SEZ, contributing to the establishment of manufacturing infrastructure, while Korean companies have been actively advancing into Myanmar particularly in the garment and textile industries. Approximately 30,000 Myanmarese currently reside in Korea, with employment migration through the Employment Permit System (EPS) serving as the primary pathway. Even amid the changes in bilateral relations following the 2021 military coup, the Embassy continues to provide consular services and humanitarian support to Myanmarese nationals in Korea.
