Korea and Nepal established diplomatic relations in 1974, and the bilateral relationship has developed steadily around people-to-people exchange and development cooperation. Nepal is uniquely known as the only country in the world with a non-rectangular (double-pennant) national flag, and as a mecca for mountain tourism with eight Himalayan peaks exceeding 8,000 meters including Everest, many Korean expedition teams visit Nepal every year. Approximately 50,000 Nepalese currently reside in Korea, most of them migrant workers employed through the Employment Permit System (EPS), and their remittances account for a significant portion of Nepal's GDP. Beyond EPS-related administration and consular services, the Embassy supports Korea-Nepal joint Himalayan expeditions and cultural exchange programs.
