Korea and Sri Lanka established diplomatic relations in 1977, but the connection between the two countries dates back to the Korean War (6·25). At the 1951 San Francisco Peace Conference, Sri Lanka's (then Ceylon) Finance Minister J.R. Jayewardene delivered a historic speech supporting the Republic of Korea, and Sri Lanka is remembered as a nation of solidarity for providing rice aid to impoverished Koreans during the war. Ceylon Tea, gemstones (sapphires and rubies), and natural rubber are major trade items, with Korean garments and electronics exported to Sri Lanka. Approximately 30,000 Sri Lankans currently reside in Korea, with migrant workers through the Employment Permit System (EPS) comprising the majority, and the Embassy provides active consular services for them.
