Korea and Greece established diplomatic relations in 1961, but the bond runs deeper than six decades of diplomacy. Greece sent around 5,000 troops to fight alongside South Korea during the Korean War — a sacrifice Koreans have not forgotten. Today the relationship is shaped by growing people-to-people ties: Greek tourism to Korea has surged with the K-culture wave, and Korean visitors flock to Athens and the Aegean islands. The two countries maintain regular diplomatic consultations on regional and global issues.

Bilateral trade reached roughly $1.94 billion in 2023, with Korean exports of $1.03 billion and imports of $910 million — a notably balanced relationship. Korea ships cars, ship components, and electronics to Greece, while Greek exports include aluminum products, petroleum chemicals, and refined oil. Greece's world-leading shipping industry creates an important side channel: many of the world's largest fleet owners commission vessels from Korean shipyards, making maritime commerce a key pillar of economic ties.
