Korea and Hungary established full diplomatic relations in February 1989 — notably, Hungary was the first Eastern Bloc country to recognize South Korea, a landmark moment in Korean diplomatic history and a pivotal step in opening the socialist world to Seoul. This pioneering role is remembered warmly in Korea. The economic relationship has grown dramatically: Hungarian-Korean trade has increased more than tenfold since the 1990s, and Korean investment in Hungary's manufacturing sector — particularly in EV batteries — positions Hungary as a cornerstone of Korea's European industrial strategy. People-to-people ties are strengthened by the presence of a large Korean student community, particularly in Budapest's medical schools.

Hungary is one of Korea's most dynamic trading partners in Europe. Two-way trade reached approximately $7.62 billion in 2023. Korean exports of $6.79 billion are dominated by EV batteries (Samsung SDI, SK Innovation), electronics, and machinery, while Hungarian exports of $829 million include vehicles, automotive components, and manufactured goods — increasingly produced in Korean-owned facilities. Hungary's role in Korea's European EV battery supply chain is growing rapidly as new plant expansions come online.
