Korea established relations with Czechoslovakia in March 1990 and maintained continuity with Slovakia after the 1993 'Velvet Divorce.' What began as a modest post-Cold War diplomatic relationship has grown into one of the most economically significant Korean partnerships in Europe. Kia's manufacturing plant in Žilina, opened in 2006, became a landmark investment that transformed the bilateral relationship and created thousands of jobs. Samsung SDI and SK Innovation's battery plants have since deepened the partnership further, aligning Slovakia with Korea's global electric vehicle supply chain.

Slovakia punches well above its weight as a Korean trade partner. Two-way trade reached approximately $3.9 billion in 2023, with Korean exports of $2.98 billion — primarily electric vehicle batteries, automotive components, and electronics — and Slovak exports of $929 million including vehicles, auto parts, and manufactured goods. Much of this trade is intra-company: Kia Žilina and Samsung SDI's Bratislava plant create substantial flows of components and finished products between the two countries.
