Korea and Spain established diplomatic relations in 1950, making Spain one of Korea's earliest European diplomatic partners. The relationship has deepened significantly through the Korea-EU Free Trade Agreement (2011), expanding two-way trade and investment. Spain is an increasingly important market for Korean automobiles, electronics, and cultural exports — Hyundai and Kia have strong market positions, and K-pop has a substantial Spanish fanbase. Spanish companies, particularly in infrastructure, renewable energy, and food, have also invested in Korea. The two countries cooperate through EU-Korea multilateral frameworks.

Korea and Spain recorded approximately $5.8 billion in two-way trade in 2023. Korean exports of $3.2 billion are led by automobiles (Hyundai and Kia together hold a significant Spanish market share), electronics, and industrial equipment. Spain's exports of $2.6 billion include automobiles and auto parts, food and beverages, machinery, and pharmaceutical products. Spanish tourism to Korea has also grown, and Korean tourism to Spain — particularly to Barcelona and Madrid — is substantial.
